Embark Richmond Highway Community Meeting Set for July 25
FABB members may recall from earlier posts that the Embark Richmond Highway project supports the county’s long term goals of improving the county’s pedestrian and bicycle systems, expanding transit service, and building more dense, mixed-use, transit-oriented developments to attract residents and businesses, create more jobs, and increase tax revenue. Among the presentations to be made at the meeting, there will be a discussion of the proposed Richmond Highway multi-modal cross-section that accommodates transit, automobiles, bicycles and pedestrians. A brief question and answer period will follow the presentations and the public will be able to talk one-on-one with county staff representatives who are leading various aspects of the project.
To make it easier to attend, Fairfax County has posted maps and schedules here for public transportation to the event through Fairfax Connector Routes 152, 161 & 162. Also, on-site childcare is available, on request, for children over the age of 3. Requests for childcare and transportation assistance will be accepted through Thursday, July 21, 2016, by calling 703-704-6700, TTY 711, or by email at maria.franco-nativi@fairfaxcounty.gov.
The Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning (DPZ), Fairfax County Office of Community Revitalization and Reinvestment (OCR), and Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will be hosting a live online chat on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at 11 a.m., to help answer questions from residents impacted by the Embark Richmond Highway project. From the public comments regarding bicycle facilities:
- Improvements in bicycle travel and key connections are needed throughout the study area. This includes new and wider pavement on existing paths such as W&OD and Custis as well as new connections to transit. (6)
- Provide a bike/pedestrian crossing near West Falls Church Metro to link Haycock Rd./W&OD with Pimmitt Hills neighborhood. (2) More bicycle parking is needed at Metro stations. (2)
- Provide bicycle access along U.S. 50 across the Beltway to connect Merrifield and Graham Rd. areas. (2)
- Try to create a safe bike trail into the heart of Tysons Corner from the W&OD trail.
- Extend the Custis Trail beyond East Falls Church.
- The Custis Trail needs to be completely redesigned and rebuilt. The steep slopes discourage commuter cycling. The trail should have the same gradual changes in elevation as do the highway travel lanes.
- A viable two-way solution to reducing traffic is to further promote the use of what is already there along I-66 - a bike path.
- Need an improved bike/pedestrian connection from Rosslyn/Iwo Jima Memorial to Theodore Roosevelt Bridge.

I-66 public meeting tonight
Cyclists are encouraged to attend the meeting and speak out for bike access along the I-66 corridor. We need a major trail along I-66 similar to the Custis Trail. Bicyclists also need to be able to safely cross I-66, which forms a major east-west barrier in many areas of western Fairfax Co.

Multimodal options for I-66 inside the Beltway
Wouldn't it be great if the Custis Trail, which runs parallel to I-66 from Rosslyn to the East Falls Church Metro station, extended into Fairfax. It would provide better bike access to the West Falls Church, Dunn Loring, and Vienna Metro stations. Extending it inside the Beltway would be a start. The County Trails Plan indicates a planned trail along I-66 outside the Beltway so it makes sense to extend it inside the Beltway.
Bike access across I-66 needs to be improved, especially along Route 7 near the West Falls Church Metro station. Many more people would travel by bike in this area if there were safer bike conditions. There also needs to be bike access to the WFC station from the Pimmit Hills area across I-66.
Cyclists are encouraged to attend to show support for better bicycling in the I-66 corridor.

Chairman Bulova's State of the County speech
As I discussed earlier, improving mobility in Fairfax County that incorporates multi-modal options for our workers and residents will be a top priority for 2011.
Transportation is not just about roads. We must also plan for and invest in pedestrian and bike routes, light rail, Metro, the VRE and transit. And most importantly, these various modes need to be developed in a way that they connect and create an efficient system for those of us who live, work and play in Fairfax County.
During the months ahead, I will work with my colleagues, our staff and with the Commonwealth and our Federal partners to flesh out our multi-modal transportation plans.

History is being made as what has been a sprawling (albeit highly successful) retail and commercial center, amid a sea of impervious parking lots, is being transformed into a compact, walkable, transit-oriented, mixed use urban community – a new development pattern for Fairfax County, offering a new lifestyle choice for our residents.
