$6.7 Million in Little River Turnpike Improvements Sought
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors this week will be reviewing for approval a package of bicycle and pedestrian transportation improvement projects developed from FCDOT's Little River Turnpike Bicycle Corridor Study, which covers portions of Braddock, Mason and Providence Districts.
The Little River Turnpike study refined the county’s corridor design as envisioned in the 2014 Bicycle Master Plan. It resulted in short and long-term recommendations for bicycle facilities along the approximately seven-mile corridor through Annandale between the City of Fairfax and the City of Alexandria. The study emphasized improving connectivity, comfort, and convenience for bicyclists currently utilizing the corridor but also on developing a corridor where novice bicyclists will feel more comfortable and safe. The study provided the added benefit of enhancing pedestrian environments through complementary bicycle treatments, specifically shared-use paths, median refuge areas, and enhanced crossing treatments.
The short and long-term recommendations were based in part on existing funded and planned projects, including: ongoing repaving projects on Little River Turnpike and adjacent streets; funded pedestrian walkways and crosswalks on Little River Turnpike; funded bike lanes connecting to Little River Turnpike (some of which were constructed during the study); and a long-term widening and streetscaping study for Little River Turnpike between I-495 and John Marr Drive.
Among the improvements for the 13 Eastbound segments are a shared-use path along the existing shoulder with upgraded ramps and crosswalks between Lake Drive and Pineridge Drive and shared-lane markings (sharrows) between Pineridge Drive and Pinecrest Parkway with improved crossings at the I-495 ramps. The 14 Westbound segments feature an improved transition from the shared-use path to an existing frontage road between Wakefield Chapel Road and Lake Drive with ADA-compliant ramp, signage and sharrows. Additional sharrows will be installed between Pineridge Drive and Backlick Road. Funding for all of these improvements was previously approved.

Little River Turnpike Study Published
The final Little River Turnpike bicycle study has been completed and is available on the Fairfax County Department of Transportation webpage. The study presents proposals for changes to improve bicycling along the Little River Turnpike from the City of Fairfax to Alexandria. It has been sent to the Board of Supervisors for endorsement.
FABB participated in the public meeting on the study last September. The comments by our members and others who were there clearly had an impact on the planning and development of the study’s proposed bicycle improvements.
The importance of showing up and making our voices heard can’t be overemphasized. Studies also are underway for the Fairfax County Parkway Trail at the Dulles Toll Road, the Monroe Street Bridge over Rt. 267, and neighborhood connections to the north side of Innovation Station. If we speak up, the county will listen.

Little River Turnpike Bicycle Study Meeting Sept. 26
At the meeting, FCDOT staff will be presenting recommended concepts for projects to implement in the short-term, and long-term recommendations for the corridor. FCDOT is seeking feedback on the recommended concepts and for prioritizing projects for implementation.
Community Meeting Held May 17; Public Comments Accepted Through July 31, 2016
Fairfax County Department of Transportation hosted a community meeting on May 17 to discuss ways to improve bicycling along Little River Turnpike from the City of Fairfax to Alexandria. The purpose of the meeting was to gather information from the public on existing conditions, problem locations, and short- and long-term improvements that will make bicycling viable in this corridor.

Faces of Fairfax - William Clougherty and Donald Curran

William Clougherty of Oak Hill and Donald Curran of Burke posed together when FABB approached them on Bike to Work Day in Burke. William said he does most of his riding on the W&OD Trail. Donald, who was featured in Faces of Fairfax last year, regularly bikes to work but also rides for enjoyment. He said that he enjoys the feeling of freedom he gets when he bikes. Both men said they would like to see more bike lanes and trails to make riding easier and safer in Fairfax County.
In 2016 FABB has been active advocating for Fairfax County and VDOT to continue making multimodal improvements to improve side trails and ramp crossings and add bike lanes, shoulders and wide curb lanes to routes such as the Fairfax County and Franconia-Springfield parkways and the Little River Turnpike inside the Beltway. FABB continues to encourage people who ride bikes or love someone who does to make their voices heard on improving bicycling infrastructure and safety at public hearings publicized on this blog site.

Help Fairfax County Improve Little River Turnpike/Route 236 for Bikes
Are you familiar with bike conditions on Little River Turnpike inside the Beltway? The 2014 Transportation Priorities Plan allocated $7.5 million to "Add bike lanes, wide curb lanes, bike shoulders to complete network gaps" along the roadway. The county is conducting the Little River Turnpike Bicycle Study to determine what improvements are needed. Little River Turnpike Bicycle Study Meeting Set for May 17
FABB wants to alert members and other interested riders and citizens to a community meeting hosted by the Fairfax County Department of Transportation on Tuesday, May 17, to discuss ways to improve bicycling along Little River Turnpike from the City of Fairfax to Alexandria. The goal of this public forum is to gather information from local residents on existing conditions, problem locations, and short- and long-term improvements that will make bicycling viable in this corridor.
