Mason Neck Trail Ribbon Cutting
FABB Vice President Sonya Breehey joined local officials and advocates at a ribbon cutting for a new segment of the Mason Neck Trail this past Saturday. The celebration was for the completion of the 9,900-foot Segment 2B of the planned 5.5 mile trail that will ultimately connect Rt. 1 to the Great Marsh Trail on the end of Mason Neck running along Gunston Rd.
Portions of the trail already built connect from Pohick Bay Golf Course, Meadowood Recreation Area, Pohick Bay Regional Park, Gunston Hall Plantation and High Point Trail in Mason Neck State Park.
This $1.6 million project was funded with Virginia Department of Transportation Enhancement Funds and a contribution from Fairfax County.

Fairfax Board of Supervisors endorses FY2014 trail projects
Today the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors endorsed three major trail project funding applications that will be submitted to VDOT for Transportation Alternatives funding. The Transportation Alternatives Program is the successor to the federal Transportation Enhancements program. This year VDOT is only accepting applications for grants that have current Transportation Enhancement funding. Next year VDOT plans to open the program to new applications. The three projects are:
Cross-County Trail (CCT) in Lorton— Fairfax County is proposing the design and construction of a new multi-use trail to provide non-motorized access between the Occoquan Regional Park and the Laurel Hill Greenway, both of which are portions of the CCT. The trail connects users with the historic Workhouse Arts Center, a program of the Lorton Arts Foundation (LAF), which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and enhances an already significant historic destination.
Mason Neck Trail—Construction of a multi-use trail to provide non-motorized access to the historic, environmental and recreational resources of Pohick Bay Regional Park, the Meadowood Recreation Area, Gunston Hall Plantation, Mason Neck State Park and the Elisabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge.
Phase III of the Georgetown Pike Walkway Project—The project will be constructed at the western end of Georgetown Pike, connecting the Seneca Shopping Center and site of the historic Salem Baptist Church with the western terminus of Georgetown Pike Trail Project – Phase 2.

Archaeological Display to open on the Mason Neck Bike Trail
Fairfax County is home to many historical sites, and many are accessible by bike. The county recently received Transportation Enhancement funds for a map of civil war sites. At least their application was approved; we're not sure if they've actually received the funds. On Sunday at 3:30pm the David Archaeological Interpretive Site Display will open on the Mason Neck Bike Trail:
This extraordinary site, located on land owned by Gunston Hall, was intermittently occupied for more than 13,000 years, from Paleoindian to possibly early European contact years. The site yielded thousands of artifacts, 27 cultural features and 7 radiocarbon dates, and a new understanding of the human ecology of Mason Neck.
Why not take a ride along the Mason Neck Trail, check out the ribbon-cutting at 3:30pm and enjoy refreshments at the visitors center. Here's a map of trails in Mason Neck Park. Information about the Mason Neck Trail project. Mason Neck inset on county bike map.Labels: mason neck trail
