Bikes for the World Fairfax collections in March

Bikes for the World is holding two collection events in Fairfax this month. Bikes for the World collects bikes, tubes, tires, parts, and all cycling accessories. Donated bikes will be distributed overseas, where they will be reconditioned by community organizations to improve the lives of impoverished people by helping them get to work, school and health clinics. Donated used parts will help mechanics repair bikes in Africa and Central America.

Senator Tim Kaine visits Green Lizard Cycling today

Green Lizard owner Dave Meyer, Supervisor John Foust,
Senator Tim Kaine, and Herndon Mayor Lisa Merkel
Just after the Friday Coffee Club convened at Green Lizard Cycling, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine stopped by the shop as part of a series of visits to local Virginia businesses. Senator Kaine is a cyclist who has participated in at least one BikeVirginia. Green Lizard owner Dave Meyer gave the Senator a tour of the shop. He later presented Senator Kaine with a t-shirt, water bottle, and a nice pair of Green Lizard sunglasses.

We pine for the days when Sen. Kaine was governor of Virginia. He actually thought more people should bike commute to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Governor's Commission on Climate Change report which appears to be no longer online) and to save fuel and reduce air pollution (Virginia Energy Plan which also appears to be no longer online).

Friday Coffee Club in Fairfax

Each Friday morning a huge mob of bike commuters informally gathers for a cup of coffee before work at M.E. Swings Coffee near the White House in DC. The gatherhing is known as the Friday Coffee Club.  Recently Friday Coffee Club II got underway in Arlington.

This Friday, Fairfax County gets in on the action.  Friday Coffee Club III will kick off at Green Lizard Cycling in Herndon (718 Lynn Street, Herndon, Virginia, 20170). The shop is located just off the W&OD.  The start time is posted as 7:15, but these things tend to be quite flexible as people work it into their work schedules.  Hopefully it will be an ongoing thing.

Fairfax bike commuters are welcome to attend and enjoy a cup of coffee (or smoothie or other drinks and pastries) with fellow cyclists.

New bike shop in Herndon opens soon

Green Lizard Cycling, a new bike shop in downtown Herndon, plans to have a soft opening this weekend. We stopped by the shop today as shop staff were scurrying around getting ready for customers. I stuck my head in the store and the owner, Dave Meyer, introduced himself and told me a bit about the shop. There will be a coffee bar on the left as you enter the shop. They will sell road, hybrid, mountain, and kids bikes. They also plan to rent bikes.

Hefler Performance Coaching, a shop located nearby that does endurance athlete coaching, will move into a space in the back to the shop. They are currently located across the side street near Great Harvest Bread store.

This is a great location for a bike shop. The W&OD Trail is across the street and the bread store is nearby. Many cyclists pass through Herndon and lots of them stop by the bread store.

The Green Lizard Cycling website is just a template for now (lot's of "lorem ipsum" text). Their Facebook page has more current info. We wish Green Lizard good luck in their new venture. This is another sign of the popularity of cycling in this area.
