Capital Region Blueprint for Regional Mobility

In case you missed it, the Washington Post reported today that the Greater Washington Partnership, an alliance of the region’s top chief executives, is urging ambitious, costly steps to improve multimodal transportation options. After 16 months of study, the report, Capital Region Blueprint for Regional Mobility, recommended connecting bike trails in addition to more dedicated bus lanes, coordinated traffic signals, and variable tolling on highways. The group’s blueprint specifically urges federal, state, and local governments to collaborate with trails groups and private entities to speed up the delivery of the Capital Trails Network and similar trail networks for Baltimore and Richmond.
FABB is ready to collaborate as are our allies in the Capital Trails Coalition. With your support and volunteering, we can make the bicycling proposals come to fruition.

An Impressive Vision of a Regional Trail System
The Capital Trails Coalition is releasing a new map this week that conveys the overall concept of the Capital Trails Network while providing a stunning visual of what our region could look like when we prioritize trail development and connectivity. FABB is particularly excited to see so many planned trails and connections in and around Fairfax County.
A connected regional trail network transforms public life in the region by providing healthy, low-stress options for accessible, safe transportation and recreation. Many of the trails that will comprise the interconnected Capital Trails Network exist today, but hundreds of miles are needed before the network is complete.
FABB is a proud member of the coalition and strongly supports the group’s effort to build a world-class trail network for our region. The collaboration among the coalition’s public and private organizations, agencies, business improvement districts, and citizen volunteers will bring this vision to life.

Your Input Needed to Name Metro-area Trail Network

Hey, FABB members, as you may recall, FABB is now part of the Capital Trails Coalition, a collaboration of public and private organizations, agencies, and citizen volunteers working to create a world-class network of multi-use trails that are equitably distributed throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan region. Such a network will transform public life by providing healthy, low-stress access to open space and reliable transportation for people of all ages and abilities.
The Coalition would like your feedback as it develops a unified identity for the existing and planned trail network in the Washington, DC region. The group has a few ideas that it would like to hear your thoughts on, and you'll have a chance to share your own at the end of this very quick survey (truly, it is very quick… two-minutes max).

Capital Trails Coalition Announcement Tomorrow, Oct. 13
The Capital Trails Coalition is a collaboration of public and private organizations, agencies, and citizen volunteers working to advance completion of an interconnected network of multi-use trails for metropolitan Washington, DC. A press event will be held tomorrow, Oct. 13 to announce the formation of the Coalition. The event will take place along the Mt Vernon Trail near the Pentagon Lagoon bridge starting at 10:30 a.m.FABB plans to be part of the Coalition. The Coalition is currently defining a regional trail network in the Metro DC area. The work is in part an outgrowth of MWCOG's Bicycle Beltway working group (doc file) and National Park Service's Paved Trail Plan.
We hope to identify a bicycle beltway route in Fairfax County that would tie together the Mt Vernon and W&OD Trails and would include parts of the Franconia-Springfield Parkway and Fairfax County Parkway trails and the Cross County Trail.
Below is a map produced by the Bicycle Beltway working group and included in their report and in the Paved Trail Plan. The green route was endorsed by the National Park Service as the National Capital Trail. As you can see, very little of that network is located in Fairfax County:
