Call for Donations for Herndon MS After-School Bike Shop
By FABB Member Kelley Westenhoff
Did you know that Fairfax County has an after-school bike shop where students learn how to fix bikes? Meeting on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, Herndon Middle School students learn by doing, fixing donated bikes for others. The program has three components.
-Students fix and clean donated bikes that are returned to the community as gifts via Cornerstones Neighborhood Resource Center in Herndon during the holidays, helping out families whose cannot otherwise provide bikes for their children. Each child also receives a helmet courtesy of Reston Bicycle Club and parents receive information about bike safety.
-Students fix and clean donated bikes to sell at the Reston Association Yard Sale twice a year generating funds to continue the program.
-Students can earn the opportunity to build up a bike for their own use or to give to a friend or family member who needs one.
The program runs with the school year, and right now students are as busy as Santa's elves working on the holiday donations. The shop needs bike donations, particularly small adult bikes.

Alexandria Spokeswomen to lead bike shop ride
From Alexandria Spokeswomen:
Alexandria women will be heading out on two wheels from Jones Point Park on Sunday, May 4th, to let the local bike shops know that they are an important and rapidly growing market for them. "Women are a powerful consumer force," says the League of American Bicyclists in its August 2013 "Women on a Roll" report on women's cycling, "but too often they do not feel welcome in bike shops or do not feel products address their desires and needs."
The ride is being organized by the Alexandria Spokeswomen, a group that formed in September 2013 out of a city focus group on women's cycling. One of the key issues discussed was that many women bike riders do not feel comfortable in shops and on rides, which are often dominated by men. The League's report, which had just been released, validated that sentiment. It also showed that bike shops might be wise to provide a wider selection of women's clothing and more women-targeted classes, events and rides

Bikenetic Grand Opening today
We were able to stop by Bikenetic, the new Falls Church bike shop, for their Grand Opening today. The shop is located at 922 West Broad Street (Route 7) just east of West St, not far from where the W&OD Trail crosses Route 7. While close to the trail, it's a little tricky getting to the shop by bike. Check the map before heading out. It's adjacent to a very nice restaurant, Panjshir, which formerly had a sister restaurant in Vienna, Panjshir II.The shop has lots of floor space, with a long, narrow showroom, a seating area with a wide screen TV, and some comfortable chairs to use while you wait for your bike.
There is a large full-service area adjacent to a side entrance, with a dedicated service check-in counter. They sell new and used bikes from Kona, Bianchi and Jamis.
The owner, Jan Feuchtner, was formerly co-owner of Oasis Bike Works. We wish Jan well in this new endeavor. It's always good for the bike community to have another locally-owned bike shop in the area.
