FABB Bike Education Classes Coming to George Mason University
FABB is proud to be working with George Mason University’s Transportation Office to offer bicycle classes for students and staff this fall. Details are being finalized, but we are tentatively set to hold classes on September 21 and October 20.
If you or someone you know is a GMU student who would like to learn to ride a bike, please mark the dates and watch for registration details here or on FABB’s other social media.
GMU is very supportive of biking. In early September its Parking and Transportation offices will help Mason cyclists to register their bikes and even provide first-time registrants with a free U-lock, bike lights, safety information, and more. Mason Recreation, the Office of Sustainability, and Parking and Transportation have teamed up to bring the Mason community a free bike check out program. This pilot program will start with five bikes that are available for checkout for a day at no cost. Details on both of these programs can be found here.

Register Now for FABB Adult Learn to Ride Classes
If you or someone you know want to experience the joys of biking but have not yet learned to ride, now is your chance! FABB is offering classes for adults (18 years and up) on three different Saturdays in August and September. Our team of certified instructors will teach the basics in a helpful learn-at-your-own-pace class. Over the course of two hours they will help students get their balance on a bike and then progress into using pedals and basic riding skills.
Register now for class on either August 11, August 18, or September 8 at our Eventbrite page. Classes will be from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Fairfax County Government Center’s Parking Lot B. Students need to wear comfortable clothing suitable for the weather and need a bike and a helmet that fits.
If you have questions, please email FABB’s Education Coordinator at education@fabb-bikes.org.
Special accommodations will be provided upon request. Please call the education coordinator at 540-227-6051 two working days before the event to make the necessary arrangements.

Reminder: Bike Safety Classes in Reston
Registration will open for non-Reston residents this week for the Reston Community Center’s bicycle workshops and classes scheduled for later this summer. The Confident Cycling Class will offer three 3-hour sessions to help riders improve their skills for controlling their bike, avoiding crashes, and getting out of dangerous situations. There also will be a Learn to Bike class for children (6-14 years old) and one for adults (15 years and older). The costs of the workshops and classes vary, but these are great investments for new riders and aspiring commuters. We have good news for people interested in improving their bicycling skills or just learning how to bike. There will be a series of workshops and classes taught this summer at the Reston Community Center by FABB member and certified cycling instructor Kelley Westenhoff.
And, yes, we realize that most FABB members probably are experienced enough to not need classes. But, we bet that you may know someone or some kids who would like to learn to bike. Or perhaps you have a friend or neighbor who has seen the new Bike Share stations around the county, has started thinking about trying bicycling commuting, and would appreciate some advice on being a more confident, comfortable, and safe rider. If so, please help spread the word and let people know that registration opens for Reston residents on May 1, 2017, and for non-residents the following week on May 8, 2017.
