Liberty Bell Trail Ribbon Cutting This Saturday
The Liberty Bell Trail, the newest segment of the Pohick Stream Valley Trail in Burke, will be opened on Saturday, 3 June. Members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Park Authority Board, and Fairfax County Park Foundation Board will be there for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 am. The Trail is located at 9239 Burke Road and can be accessed from Burke Road near Liberty Bell Court.
FABB encourages our members in the area to go out and show some love and support to the new trail and the various county officials and board members who made it happen. Saturday also is National Trails Day, so this is a great opportunity to show your support for all trails with a nice ride along the new trail.

The Liberty Bell Trail
FABB Board member Alan Young, who also is the Springfield Trails and Sidewalks Representative, sent us the following update on the Liberty Bell Trail:
If you live in West Springfield/Burke near Shiplett Boulevard, Burke, Burke Lake or Coffer Woods Roads, you may have noticed the construction in the Pohick Stream Valley behind the Burke Post Office and Burke Nursery. This is the long awaited Liberty Bell Trail. It will allow pedestrian and bike connections between Shiplett Boulevard at Hatches Court (near White Oaks Elementary), Burke Road at the 90-degree bend called fondly by many "Dead Man's Curve,” and Burke Lake Road at the Coffer Woods Signal.
The trail is a joint VDOT and Fairfax County Parks project designed to connect neighborhoods in the Pohick Valley Stream Park area to the Burke Road bike lanes leading to the Rolling Road VRE station. It also connects to the Burke VRE Station via the Burke VRE trail and to businesses along Roberts Road and Burke Lake Road, including the Burke Post Office. This new bicycle and pedestrian facility will provide local residents and visitors with much needed recreational and nature access to the Pohick Stream Valley. By extending the trail network to the Burke VRE station, the farmers market there will just be a short and fun Saturday morning run/ride away!
Watch this blog for more information about the scheduling of and participation in the opening celebration.

February 26 meeting on proposed bike facilities in Burke - Update
Fairfax County is holding a meeting on proposed bike facilities on Shiplett Boulevard and Burke Road on Thursday, February 26. This meeting is one of a series of meetings on planned bike projects to be implemented as part of the summer repaving schedule.Bike lanes are being proposed on Shiplett Boulevard from Burke Lake Road to Old Keene Mill Road AND on Burke Road from Burke Lake Road to Rolling Road by reducing roadway lane width, known as a "lane diet." No roadway widening is anticipated.
The meeting will be held on February 26 at the West Springfield Community Center, Community Room located at 6140 Rolling Road. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Cyclists are encouraged to attend to support these projects. While there should be little or no opposition, it helps to have cyclists present to voice their support. Please consider attending. See an earlier FABB blog posting about funded projects.
On a related note, see an earlier presentation on the proposed road diet on Kingstowne Village Parkway.
Update: The Liberty Bell Trail is scheduled to be completed this year and would connect to bike lanes on Burke Road, providing another incentive for more people to use bikes to get to the VRE station and for other short trips. See an earlier FABB blog entry about the Liberty Bell Trail.

Pohick Stream Valley - Liberty Bell Trail
Fairfax County is seeking comments on the plans for the Liberty Bell Trail in the Burke area. FABB's Alan Young recently wrote an article about the proposal in the Burke Patch: Public Review Requested by Jan 14 - Pohick Stream Valley - Liberty Bell Trail:
The Park Authority has published a preliminary set of plans for the builiding of the new Pohick Stream Valley - Liberty Bell Trail, projected for completion in 2014-15. This trail is designed to connect to the new Burke VRE trail that runs from Burke VRE station along Pohick Stream to Coffer Woods at Burke Lake Road. Here is a link to an approximation of the routing.
FCPA is taking public comments until Jan. 14. Send them to Thomas McFarland, project manager, 12055 Government Center Pkwy., Suite 406, Fairfax, VA 22035, parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov.
