Take the Car Free Pledge - Car Free Day Sept. 22

For some people Car Free Day is every day. Most cyclists can go car free on many days but especially in Fairfax County, it's not easy to get by without a car. The official Car Free Day in Metro DC is Thursday, September 22. Why not pledge to go car free on that day? Besides the satisfaction of going car free, there are also prizes.

So far the majority of people who have taken the pledge are bicyclists. Scroll down to the bottom of the Car Free Day page to see the breakout of car free options. Those bicyclists may also be taking transit and walking but they identify as bicyclists.

FABB is working to improve biking so that everyone has the option to travel safely by bike. The number one reason people don't bike is because they don't think it's safe. We are your local advocacy group working with VDOT, county staff, county Supervisors, and others to support bike lanes, cycle tracks, bike education in the schools, bike parking, etc.

Car Free Day is September 22 - Join #teambike

From Commuter Connections:

Pledge for Car Free Day and Choose Your Team!

Demonstrate Support for a Greener Commute by Choosing #teambike, #teamwalk, #teamrail, #teambus, #teampool or #teamtelework on September 22!

Washington D.C. — This year metropolitan Washington area commuters, residents, and students who pledge to go car free or car-lite on Car Free Day, Tuesday, September 22 can join the team that best fits their preferred way to travel—and qualify for drawings for great prizes. Commuter Connections invites participants to choose #teambike, #teamwalk, #teamrail, #teambus, #teampool or #teamtelework when they register at www.carfreemetrodc.org, to show how they travel, and post stories about the benefits of alternatives to driving alone on social media. Travelers trying a new mode for the first time—and those who already travel car free—can take the pledge.

Commuter Connections, the region’s commuter transportation network coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, organizes the annual event in the metropolitan Washington area to encourage travelers to try a train, bus, bicycle, car or vanpool, or walk instead of driving alone. Celebrated in 1,500 cities in 40 counties, World Car Free Day is an annual event that challenges everyone who drives a car to try greener, more efficient transportation options that can be integrated into their daily lives.

“Car Free Day is a great opportunity to get commuters who drive alone thinking about an alternate mode of commuting. And that is an important first step,” said Nicholas Ramfos, Commuter Connections Director. “Our research, the 2013 State of the Commute, shows that among commuters who started using a new alternate mode within the past three years, about one-third shifted from driving alone.”

Information on team travel options and ridematching is available at the Commuter Connections website. Site visitors can set up a free account and request a ridematch, make carpooling plans, and learn about other transportation opportunities to decrease the number of single-occupant vehicles on the road and congestion around the region.

Stay up to date on #CarFreeMetroDC on Facebook and Twitter.

Car Free Day is Saturday September 22

If you don't already, why not go car free for a day on Saturday, September 22, Car Free Day. There are several events being held on that day in the Metro area, although it appears there are none in Fairfax County. From the MWCOG press release:
Participants are encouraged to use the event to explore alternative transportation modes or more efficient uses of their cars like sharing a ride to sporting events, concerts or other special events. To find others who may be interested in sharing the ride to a special event, drivers can visit Commuter Connections to set up a free account and then request a special event ridematch.

Even residents who already use alternative modes of transportation, such as bicycles, transit, walking, and carpooling, can make a pledge to go Car Free or Car-Lite September 22. Plus, those who pledge will become eligible to win great prizes such as an iPad, a bicycle, SmarTrip Cards and more! Pledging is free and easy at www.carfreemetrodc.org.
Thanks to Allen Muchnick of VBF for this reminder. He posted a notice on the Virginia bike advocates list, vabike.posterous.com. Registration required.

Capital Bikeshare opens today

While bike sharing has been available in DC since 2008 when Smartbike DC was launched with 10 stations and 100 bikes, a new system, Capital Bikeshare, opens today with 114 stations and 1,100 bicycles. The key to successful bike sharing is having a critical mass of bikes and stations so users can count on finding bikes, and places to park them, for most of their short trips. While 114 stations isn't nearly enough to cover an area the size of DC and Arlington, it's a great start. As The WashCycle says, "things will never be the same again."
Dan Malouff is right, "Bikesharing is going to be awesome." It will be the biggest thing to happen to area transit since Metrorail opened. It will change travel patterns and attitudes. It'll be good for the economy and public health. The DC region has seen a steady climb in bike commuting from 1.26% in 2005 to 1.63% in 2008. That number could double in a couple of years and then double again before mid-decade. We'll see the percentage of trips - already as high as 5-7% in some neighborhoods - go up even farther where Capital Bikeshare stations are located. Metro usage could see a bump as well, as Capital Bikeshare is a perfect compliment to rail/bus transit.
We'll get a chance to check out the system on Wednesday. FABB plans to have a table at the Carfree Day event at the Crystal City Capital Bikeshare station located at Crystal Dr & 23rd St S. See the Capital Bikeshare station map. We'll have copies of the Guide for Reviewing Public Road Design and Bicycling Accommodations for Virginia Bicycling Advocates.

Happy Car Free Day

We hope everyone has a good Car Free Day,which is today, September 22. We've heard a report that the Fairfax County bike program staff were seen riding their bikes in the Fair Oaks area. The Fairfax Co DOT office is now located on Legato Road near West Ox Road, about a mile from the main government complex on Government Center Parkway. Since they frequently travel between the two locations, it makes sense to use bikes whenever possible. The Legato office staff have access to a bike room with several bike racks and some small lockers. We hope to have some photos of the recently completed room in the near future.

Car free celebrations

Two upcoming events celebrate getting around by bicycle. Celebrate Metro DC Car Free Day on Monday September 22, 2008 by using alternative transportation modes for the entire day. Many bike commuters people do so already, so Pledging to be Car Free should be easy.

If you have school-age children, International Walk and Bike to School Day on Wednesday October 8, 2008 is a great opportunity to show kids that there are ways to get to school that don't involve sitting in a car or riding in a bus. If your school doesn't celebrate this day, why not suggest that they do. You can also encourage them to implement the Safe Routes to School program.
