Fascinating Facts About Bicycling and Walking
The Alliance for Bicycling and Walking recently published the 2014 Alliance Benchmarking Report that contains a wealth of information about biking and walking in the U.S. They've created a summary of some of the findings, Fascinating Facts About Bicycling and Walking. Among those facts are:- We're seeing small but steady increases in the number of people biking and walking to work.
- Few federal dollars go towards bicycling and walking, compared to trips taken and fatality rates. For more on this topic see The wild discrepancy between bike/ped trips and bike/ped funding (charts) at Treehugger.
- There are lower bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities where there are more people are biking and walking.
- More people tend to bike or walk to work when a city has strong biking and walking advocacy.
- People are healthier in states where more people bike and walk.
- A large percentage of commuters bike and walk to work in Alaska, Oregon, Montana, New York, and Vermont. To see more on this topic, Snow & cold no excuse — a warm climate doesn't increase bicycle ridership at Treehugger.
