Fairfax County hires first Safe Routes to School Coordinator

Fairfax County Public Schools announced today that Sally Smallwood was hired as the first ever Safe Routes to School Coordinator. Funding for the position was obtained from a VDOT SRTS grant:
The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) coordinator grant position has been filled by Sally Smallwood. Sally started in the position yesterday.

Sally comes to the SRTS coordinator position after working in FCPS for 34 years as a Physical Education specialist. She has a Master’s degree in Exercise Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education. As an elementary physical education teacher she was a patrol sponsor for her school as well as the Wellness liaison. Sally has piloted several programs for her schools including Living Fit in Fairfax. One of Sally’s strengths is in organizing special events. She is excited to be a part of the FCPS SRTS program and is looking forward to developing strategies and events that will encourage students to adopt healthy behaviors including walking and biking to school.
