Environmental Council to hold public hearing on Mon. Jan. 13

The Environmental Quality Advisory Council (EQAC) is holding a public hearing on Monday January 13 to hear about environmental issues considered by EQAC. The EQAC annual report was very supportive of smart growth and a bike-friendly Fairfax. They included several strong bike recommendations.

It would be great if cyclists could attend the meeting and reinforce the EQAC recommendations by speaking out for the need for a bike-friendly Fairfax. The hearing is not about the annual report, but the report shows that EQAC understands the importance of bicycling and it helps to have cyclists acknowledge that support by talking about the need for the Board of Supervisors to adopt the bicycle master plan and to fund bike programs.

Recommendations from the Annual Report:

  • Implementation of the bicycle master plan. Bicycle paths provide healthy and effective options to move about the county and between connected destinations.
  • Expanded bicycle parking guidelines modeled on successful programs such as the new secure bicycle parking facilities at Silver Line stations and other county park-and-ride/transit facilities.
  • Funding for implementation of both capital and non-capital elements of the county’s bicycle master plan.
  • Implementation of an outreach and education program for encouraging/promoting bicycling as a transportation mode. This could be called “Bike Fairfax!”
  • Engagement of the private sector. One example of this can be seen in New York City, where CitiBank underwrites 100 percent of the cost of a bikeshare program. This could work today in several suburban and transit centers.
