VRE proposal to disallow bikes on trains

Virginia Railway Express is growing in popularity and their management is looking at ways to increase capacity. Unfortunately one proposed solution is to kick cyclists off the train. They can now bring any size bike onto the last three VRE rail cars. VRE wants to only allow folding bikes. Here's a summary of the proposal:
Bicycle Policy
  • Prior to the arrival of the new Gallery cars, VRE only permitted collapsible bicycles on board the trains.
  • Once the new Gallery cars were in operation, the policy was changed to permit bicyclists to bring full size bicycles on the last three trains on both lines in the mornings and the evenings.
  • With ridership increasing and the number of standees growing, there is little room for bicyclists to safely store their bicycles and still provide seating for all riders.
VRE is proposing to limit bicycles once again to collapsible bicycles only.
Public hearings on the proposal begin on February 1 in Fredericksburg. The Fairfax County hearing is on February 27 at Burke Centre Conservancy. If you can't attend the hearing to speak out in favor of bikes on VRE, visit the WABA Action Center to submit comments.
