Seven Corners cyclist dies of injuries suffered in crash with vehicle

This appeared in the Post today:
An 82-year-old Falls Church area man died Thursday of injuries he suffered last month when he was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bike in the Seven Corners area of Fairfax County, police said Friday.

Police said Minh Van of the 3300 block of Nevius Street was trying to cross Willston Drive near Route 50 on Nov. 24. A man driving a 2003 Dodge pickup truck, turning from Willston Drive onto Route 50, struck Van.

Van was hospitalized until his death, police said.

Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were involved, and no charges have been filed.
This has been a deadly year for bicyclists. Four cyclists have died in crashes with vehicles:
  • Abdul Chadli was killed while crossing Forum Dr at Lee Hwy/Rt 29 on May 21, Bike to Work Day
  • Rebecca Johns was killed while crossing Franconia Rd at Cannon Lane on August 30
  • Christopher Benton was struck by a car on November 14. He died on November 22
  • Minh Van was struck by a motorist while trying to cross Williston Dr near Route 50 on November 24. He died December 9
We're trying to find out more information about the crashes. We need to find out why they happened and how to prevent them.

I clicked through to all of the incidents - it appears that charges haven't been filed in any of them. Is this just a coincidence? I'm not sure how often charges are filed in car vs car accidents or car vs pedestrian accidents.

From what I know about crash stastistics there's about a 50/50 split between cyclists and motorists a to who is at fault. In the crash at Forum Dr the motorist was clearly at fault but since he died in the crash, no charges were filed. In the Rebecca Johns crash she was deemed to be at fault even though police estimate the motorist was traveling between 35-40 mph and the speed there is 35.

I believe the Seven Corners and Belle Haven/Fort Hunt crashes I are still under investigation. We're trying to find out more from FFX CO police.

Rebecca Johns (love and miss you Becky) was a freak accident where neither party was at fault.
