Bicycle racing in Reston
The Reston Town Center roads were closed to motorized traffic today as amateur cyclists raced through the streets during the Reston Town Center Grand Prix (flyer). Bikes for the World was there collecting many bikes to that will be shipped to various countries. The event is sponsored by Evloution Cycling, The Bike Lane, and Golds Gym. It was also opening day for the new Reston Town Center branch of The Bike Lane.It was great to see the Town Center devoted to a cycling event, one of many that occur there each year (Reston Bike to Work Day, the Reston Century, the Tour de Cure). Shouldn't it be a regular occurance in more places, closing the streets to cars and opening them up to people on bikes, skates, two feet, etc.?
There is a term for such a thing, Ciclovía, or life in the streets. Every Sunday in Columbia many of the main streets in the major cities are closed to cars and trucks and opened up to everyone else. Maybe one day the same will happen to Route 7 in Tysons or Route 123 in Vienna. We all pay for these roads, why shouldn't everyone be able to use them safely?

A Ciclovia on Rt 123 in Vienna would be pretty fun and I bet the businesses would profit from the increased publicity and bike traffic. Is there any chance this could be set up in the near future. Maybe once a month or something?
Is there a forum for local bike commuters that you could direct me to? Or maybe a better idea would be to set one up for FABB? Just trying to pitch an idea =].

There is no forum that I know of that is specifically for bike commuters. The fairfaxcycling listserv is used by some for commuter-related questions and info but that list isn't very active. The bikewashingtondc Yahoo group is very active and many people discuss commuter topics. I think a Fairfax or NoVa bike commuter listserv is a good idea but I also think there is lots of good expertise already on the bikewashingtondc list and it's probably the best venue for now. If you still think FABB should host a list let me know.
We did had a forum area with several topics a few years back but it took too much admin time, mostly weeding out spam messages. We didn't promote it heavily and it wasn't used much. While forums are good I tend to read listeservs like bikewashingtondc. You can receive daily email messages or receive a digest of combined messages. I have a separate free email account that receives my messages from that list.
