Bike commuting article

The Reston Connection recently published an article on bike commuting in which FABB is mentioned prominently. The title is “This Commute Avoids Traffic” which isn't quite the case. We can usually avoid much of the congestion around here by taking alternate routes or bypassing backed up traffic, or if you're really lucky like me, use the W&OD Trail for much of your commute. We're hoping that lots of people try bike commuting for a day, during Bike to Work Day, and discover the joys of getting exercise and having fun on the way to work (and on the way home).
Comments:
I just read the article and I found your site via waba.org. I have a question regarding commuting (via bike of course) from Reston to Tyson's. I would love to do it, but how can I find a place to change/shower when I get there? My building does not offer a gym facility. Any help from anyone would be appreciated - I want to start riding!

Billy,

Have you asked the building management if they have a solution? Perhaps there is a nearby health club that would allow you to just shower for a lower fee. Maybe your employer could also help cover the costs of the fee.

There is a group that is supposed to be working toward providing alternative transportation options in the Tysons area. Contact TYTRAN and ask them for help. They implement transportation demand management (TDM) measures with companies in Tysons, and these measures should include making bicycling more feasible.

Another option is to take a sponge bath at work. If you've taken a shower at home, you may generate some sweat, but you're still basically clean. Once you've changed to clean clothes, you should be in good shape. You could try it once or twice to see if you can make it work.

The best time to try is on Bike to Work Day. Register for the Tysons pit stop at waba.org. It will be held from 6:30-9:00 in front of the Booz Allen building on Greensboro Dr.

For info on routes to Tysons from Reston, see the FABB draft bike map. If you have additional questions, please contact me at bruce@fabb-bikes.org.
